Taco Plate
Brainstorm
I originally was planning on doing a mug with flowers on it, as you can see on the left, however after talking with other people and saying that my favorite food is tacos, I was given the idea to do a taco plate. I then scrapped the mug idea and decided on making a taco plate.
Reference Images and Inspiration
My original inspiration for this project was tacos, I love tacos and they are my favorite food and I eat them a lot so I wanted to make a plate specifically for tacos. I was also inspired by the two middle pictures which are taco plates but I wanted to make it have room for rice and beans like the red one but I also like the design of the wooden one. Lastly I was inspired by spanish style tiles and I wanted to do something similar for the sgraffito design.
Sketch and Plans
I did a pretty simple and quick sketch for this because I knew what I wanted to do. I also sketched out a spanish inspired design that I would add onto the plate. I planned on putting a slab of clay on a plastic plate or tray to mold the clay to that shape. I would then smooth it out and add triangular prisms which would separate the tacos. Lastly, I would add black underglaze and scrape out the design on the right.
In Progress Photos
These photos show first the tray after I molded it, smoothed it out, and added the clay which would separate the tacos. The next picture shows the plate after I added the black underglaze. The last in progress photo shows the plate after I scraped out the design I drew.
